The KWPN recently approved the Grand Prix dressage stallion Florianus following a five-day performance test on American soil. It was the first time that the KWPN tested a stallion in the U.S., attended by its sister chapter, the KWPN-NA. In the past, selected stallions - for example, Idocus - were shipped to the Netherlands to undergo the performance test. However, given the vast distance between the two countries, the KWPN and KWPN-NA have agreed to conduct the short performance test in both North America and the Netherlands. The terms and criteria for approval in North America are exactly the same as those for the Netherlands. These apply to lineage, conformation, performance (ability), health, and temperament. Because the KWPN stallion selection committee is responsible for approving stallions in both test venues, stallions approved in North America are granted the same status as those approved in the Netherlands.

Florianus is a Florestan I son out of Die Dame, a daughter of the Hanoverian stallion Damenstolz. She is a full sister to the Hanoverian stallion Dottore. Florianus' dam also produced the Westfalian-approved stallion Funkenstolz (s.Funkenspiel). The dam-line includes a Rigoletto daughter as well as daughters by the Hanoverian stallions Wohlan and Seneka II. Florianus, a bay, was born in 1998 and is 1.68 m/16.2-hands tall. He is owned by Iron Spring Farm.

Because Florianus is a Grand Prix dressage competitor under Belinda Nairn, the KWPN selection committee deemed the five-day test for stall behavior sufficient. For this purpose, the stallion was transported to John and Beezie Madden's facility in Wellington three weeks ago, where he was stabled for the test. Wim Ernes, Arie Hamoen, and Bart Henstra, acting as inspectors for the KWPN-NA, evaluated Florianus several times over the testing period. At the end of five days, they concluded that the stallion is quiet, easy to handle, and has no stable vices. Florianus' approval was announced at the conclusion of the KWPN-NA annual meeting, which was held concurrently with the testing. Incidentally, Wim Ernes also served as an FEI O-judge in Wellington.

The selection committee described Florianus as a well-developed stallion with more than sufficient dressage horse conformation and presence. His neck has good length and direction with sufficient muscling, and it extends deep from the chest. The wither is well-developed, and the back has good length but is slightly dropped. The croup is short. The front leg is sufficiently long and correct. The hind leg is straight. The feet are well-developed but narrow.

The stallion was also presented under saddle, during which he was noted for his very good workability; correct walk with sufficient stride length; and supple trot, which could show more carriage and power. Florianus collects very easily to the piaffe and passage. In the canter, which is also very workable, he demonstrates good carriage, stride length and suppleness.

The breeding/pairing recommendation is as follows: Florianus can improve the front end and add rideability as well as suppleness. He should be paired with uphill, long-lined mares.
