Similarly to the Olympic Games, it were the KWPN-horses to obtain the medals in the Paralympic Games in the arena in Deodoro. On the day of the finals, when in five Grades the Games were concluded with a freestyle to music, the KWPN-horses won six of the fifteen medals.

The day kicked off with gold for the Vivaldi-offspring Demantur of breeder/owner Tom Reuzenaar, that enjoyed the success of his chestnut gelding and rider Sanne Voets from the stand with his granddaughter Lieke. The British para-legend Lee Pearson won his eleventh golden Paralympic medal with Zion (s.Flemmingh). T

he best horse “I think Demantur is the best horse of the field by far,” says a proud Sanne Voets about her eight-year-old chestnut, bred by Tom Reuzenaar out of the mare Kaylee keur sport-dr s.Elcaro and the stallion Vivaldi. “He has the least experience and is the youngest.” Sanne gave it all in her by Armin van Buuren composed freestyle and showed off Demantur’s qualities – his expressive canter and carried trot – to the large audience in the arena.

Paralegend and powerhouse After silver on Wednesday, Zion (Flemmingh x Kennedy) bested the competition in Grade 1b and conquered the eleventh Paralympic gold medal for legend Lee Pearson, that rode a fantastic final despite his physical disabilities. “Zion is a powerhouse,” praised Pearson the horse bred by M. van de Winkel from Smakt.

Caraat shines “Fantastic, this is what we were aiming for,” says Frederike Gotink, daughter of Caraat’s breeder and owner Rien Gotink. Caraat (Gribaldi x Negro) won silver in Grade II with Rixt van der Hors. “Caraat is an incredible horse. Rixt performed a fantastic ride. This was the first big competition for Caraat, he gave it all.” Last Games for Valerius Valerius (Flemmingh out of Heidevrouwe ster prest s.Rex Magna, bred by A.M. Drenth & A.I. Zeinstra from Lucaswolde) and the British Sophie Wells took home silver in grade IV. The black gelding is active in Intermediare I in England. “This were his last Paralympic Games. He is fourteen now, hopefully I can start Grand Prix with him,” says Wells, who won silver and two gold medals in Rio. Frank Hosmar claimed three bronze medals with the appealing Sandreo-offspring

Alphaville. “I will keep on going until Tokyo. Whether I do so with Alphaville, is still to be seen. The freestyle was his best performance of the entire Games. The feeling the test gave me, was much better than the result,” says Frank, who is satisfied with triple bronze. Wild crowd Two days in a row Sergio Oliva took home bronze in grade 1a with

Coco Chanel ((Tuschinski out of Vanatina stb s.Rousseau, breeder A.J. Schalks from Nistelrode). The Brazilian audience went wild and during the prize giving ceremony it seemed as if Brazil just won the Coppa America. “I am so glad that I was able to show my family and friends what Coco Chanel and I are capable of. Coco Chanel is stabled at my coach in France. This was the first time she was in Brazil. I have been riding her for only eight months now and we have participated in three competitions in Europe so far.” That indicates both the potential of the combination, but certainly also the character of the mare. The tests in Grade 1a are ridden in walk. Sergio Oliva suffers from spasticity and is therefore physically severely disabled. Picture: Jon Stroud
