After the win in the first part and an unfortunate pole down in the second, reigning number one rider Steve Guerdat recovered excellently with the Ukato son Alamo and won the World Cup finals in Gothenburg.

The third competition round was held over two rounds and 25 of the original 33 combinations came at the start. Five of them did not have to add any penalty points after this first round and therefore, Steve Guerdat immediately went from third into the provisional first place with Alamo (Ukato from Mariona ster sport-spr prest from Equador) who is bred by Daan Nanning. The leader after two days, Eduardo Alvarez Aznar got two poles down and paved the way for two Swiss duos, including Guerdat with Alamo. Despite all the pressure on them, they managed to get a clear round in the second round of this final day which got Steve Guerdat the victory for the third time in a World Cup final.

Breeder success

A wonderful success for the breeder, former chair of the stallion inspection committee  Daan Nanning, who already bred several striking horses from the Equador daughter Mariona that jumped internationally under the name Eternity 22. In 2017 an article about this special mare appeared in the Dutch KWPN-magazine 'In de Strengen', shortly after Steve Guerdat won the Helsinki Grand Prix only a short time after he got the ride on Alamo. “Alamo has always been a very good horse. Everybody knows, you can’t predict that it is going to be a Grand Prix horse, but we always had high hopes. He was allways working with the rider, is healthy and very careful. He really had some extras, he gave us the "wow feeling" and that's why we didn't want to sell him for a long time. Anyway, every horse has its price and so we sold it as a five-year-old to Enrique Gonzales, who at the time also bought his half-brother Arly from us. He immediately sold him to Francisco Pasquel, who, after a few weeks, let his brother Gerardo ride him because it is a somewhat strong horse. Gerardo is a nice amateur rider, and he brought him to 1.45m level at which stage he came to the conclusion that the horse was a bit too good for him. He called me to say that he would let Alamo, as he was now called, be ridden by a friend of his. And that happened to be top rider Steve Guerdat! ”, Nanning told at the time.

"I felt that he gave everything"

Guerdat praised his horse Alamo when talking to 'World of Showjumping': "He was great! It was quite exciting to go into the final with him today. This was his first championship and he has never jumped this type of test for three days in a row. My biggest fear was actually the second day, because after the first place on the first day, I didn't know how he would pick up again, and I was a little nervous because he didn't feel as good as on Thursday. And I didn't really know what I could expect on the final day, but he was fantastic. I felt that he gave his all. I did not want to disappoint him because he did not let me down! I am very proud of him!"

Not the luck on her side

For title defenders Beezie Madden and the KWPN-stallion Q.Breitling LS (Quintero out of Armonia la Silla of Acord II, breeder La Silla of Nuevo Leon) the final went a bit disappointing despite their good preparation. With a lightning-fast time in every round, but always a bad luck fault, they finished sixth in the final ranking.
