The Harness Horse stallion Colonist is no longer with us. Co-owner Klaas Buist announced yesterday that the bay son of Vulcano has been euthanized for welfare reasons. He had the stallion at his stables after his return from America, where he was used for breeding by his breeder Wim Cazemier since 2013.

Buist: “After returning to our stable in Nuis, an old injury caused by trauma in the past came to light. The stallion experienced lot of problems in his general functioning. As a result, we had to shorten last year’s breeding season for welfare reasons. We hoped that he would recover sufficiently over the winter period, but unfortunately this was not the case. We have therefore made this decision in the interest of the stallion."

Colonist (Vulcano from Velony II ster of Patijn x Renovo), who was accepted into the studbook as a four-year-old with a 9 for foreleg action, comes from the dam line of Topsport mare Gelony and the KWPN stallions Ganges and Patijn. In his first two breeding seasons in the Netherlands he produced, among others, the approved stallions Indiana and Heliotroop VDM and various very good sport horses. He has also managed to make his mark in America, with several inspection champions and the licensed stallion Holland. He was Champion in Harness of America in 2014. Frozen semen of Colonist is still available.
