KWPN Select Sale collection takes shape at first-round viewing
During the KWPN Stallion Show in ’s-Hertogenbosch, a number of promising stallions are traditionally auctioned through the KWPN Select Sale (KSS). In 2026, expectations are once again high that the auction collection will be packed with top talents for both breeding and sport. The showjumping stallions will go under the hammer on Thursday, January 29, followed by the dressage stallions on Saturday, January 31.
The KWPN Select Sale collection was selected directly during the first inspection by the KWPN selectors: Nico Witte, Rom Vermunt, Daan Horn, Teus van de Brink and Sjaak van der Lei. As a result, the KSS stallions rank among the most interesting talents of their generation, assessed on sport model, type, movement or jumping ability.
Two KSS stallions approved by KWPN
Clear proof of the quality of the selection comes from the past year: two stallions sold through the KSS in early 2025 successfully completed their performance test on Saturday, December 6. These were last year’s auction topper, Scaramouche (Glock’s Toto Jr. out of Linskymorijke elite IBOP-dres sport-dres PROK D-OC by Negro, breeder Family Schellekens from Schijndel), sold for €280,000, and Story of the Year PP (Cavalier Russe out of Madermie PP by Iron Man van de Padenborre, breeder Stal Poppelaars from Heusden), who was sold to Suus Kuyten.
That the KSS consistently offers a strong collection is demonstrated by the many successes of recent years. Several stallions auctioned through the KSS have since been approved by KWPN or have gone on to enjoy highly successful sport careers.
KSS stallions in top sport
The KSS-auctioned Mauro Turfhorst (out of Hidaylia ster pref by Negro, breeder J.W. Greve from Haaksbergen) was secured this year by the Stichting N.O.P. During the most recent stallion inspection, he showed under top rider Dinja van Liere that Grand Prix exercises come naturally to him.
In dressage sport, the KSS stallion Flambeau (Ampère out of Lakarla elite pref prest sport-dres PROK by Zeoliet, breeder J. van Eijkelenburg from Oisterwijk) has also been highly successful under Belgium’s Larissa Pauluis. This year they reached the freestyle final at the European Dressage Championships in Crozet and placed eighth in the World Cup Final in Basel, following a very successful indoor season.
Promising sport horses
Last year’s much-discussed second inspection stallion Tycoon (Taurus out of Reentje by Finest Selection, breeder C. Boekhoff from Friedeburg-Marx DL), one of the highlights of the collection and sold to the USA, showed his full potential at Dressage at Devon. He won both the under-saddle class and achieved third place in the in-hand class.
Several showjumpers from the KSS also delivered strong performances over the past year. Island VG (Zirocco Blue VDL out of Ezella ster pref prest by Indoctro, breeder J. van Gestel from Hilvarenbeek) moved after many successes under TeamNL rider Kim Emmen to experienced rider Geir Gulliksen. On their World Cup debut in Oslo, they finished fifth.
Leonardo da Vinci J.P.P. (Classe HS out of Holisca J.P.P. elite EPTM-spr sport-spr PROK by I’m Special de Muze, breeder J.P.P. van Rijswijk), sold through the KSS to Poland, is now co-owned by Stal Hendrix. Under Norwegian rider Oda Charlotte Lyngvaer, he is showing great promise at 1.45m level.
