Did we see last month that Glock’s Toto Jr. is the top sire of the KWPN dressage foals, this time we had a look in the database to find out the top suppliers of jumping foals of the past year. Curious? Then quickly read on.

Everywhere you look, you see foals in the field, the most beautiful view for a breeder. In 2016 more foals were registered with KWPN than in the years before. And also in 2017, this trend continued. Last year, over 10.500 foals were registered with KWPN of which almost 4.300 dressage foals, over 5.500 jumping foals and almost 600 Harness horse foals and a little over 160 Gelder type foals.

While the top 5 suppliers of dressage foals differed greatly in terms of numbers, this does not apply to the jumping foal suppliers. With only a few foals more than the main supplier of 2016, this year the KWPN-recognized Carrera VDL (Cardento x Baloubet du Rouet) is leading. He had 163 foals registered in the past year. Ridden by Jur Vrieling the stallion was competing at the highest level and they scored a win in the Grand Prix of Vestfold. Besides the victory in Vestfold they also won the Grand Prix of De Wolden, a 1.50m in Bonheiden and in Oldenburg. With the Dutch team they became winners of the Nations Cup in Drammen. Last year, his son Merlin VDL was sixth at the National Foal Championships at the KWPN Championships.

 

Others in top 5

The number one of last year, we find this time back in second place. The six-year-old Grandorado TN (Eldorado van de Zeshoek x Carolus II) had 161 foals registered last year. In the 2014 performance test he achieved the highest score with 85.5 points. In addition, he is the winner of the Blom Stallion Competition M class and of the L class ridden by Willem Greve.
Compared to last year, Harley VDL (Heartbreaker x Carthago), who was recently awarded the preferent predicate, moved up a place in the top 5. We now see him in third place with 136 foals.
The six-year-old Clearway son Chapeau TN (mv.Quintero) is new in the top 5 with 125 foals. In 2016, this stallion was approved with 83.5 points for the performance test.
And, just like places 1 and 3, also the last place in the top 5 is for a stallion of VDL Stud: Cohinoor VDL. This son of Cornet Obolensky out of a Stakkato dam had a double clear with James Billington in the final of the Blom Stallion Competition at the KWPN Stallion Show. This stallion, that is also six-years-old was approved as a three-year-old with 83 points for the performance test. He was registered as a sire 117 times last year. In total, the top 5 stallions were good for 702 foals, which accounts for 13% of the total number of KWPN registered jumping foals.Veulens per hengst

Foals per stallion

To get a better idea of how the numbers of KWPN foals are divided among the different stallions, we have split them up. We have divided the numbers of KWPN-registered foals per stallion into five categories:

• stallions with 1 to 10 foals
• stallions with 11 to 25 foals
• stallions with 26 to 50 foals
• stallions with 51 to 116 foals
• stallions with 117 to 163 foals

The stallions with more than 117 KWPN foals can be found in the top 5 mentioned above. The group of stallions that had 1 to 10 registered foals in 2017 consists of 390 different stallions, together they have 17% of the total number of registered KWPN foals. The group of stallions with 11 to 25 foals consists of 51 different stallions, together they have 16% of the total number of registered KWPN foals. The group of stallions with 26-50 foals consists of 30 stallions, with together 18% of the total number of registered KWPN foals. The largest group is the one with stallions with 51 to 116 foals, this group has 36% of the total number of registered KWPN foals and consists of 28 different stallions.
