We had a look in the KWPN Database and found out which stallions were used the most last year. A few weeks ago,  we announced that Dressage Stallion Just Wimphof is the absolute main supplier of the KWPN foals born in 2018. This week we wonder which stallions got  the most jumper foals registered.

The jumper foals are in the majority with more than 5,600 registered with the KWPN last year, followed by the dressage foals with almost 4,700. Nearly 600 foals were registered with the KWPN  in the Harness horse direction and this number was nearly 200 for the Gelder type foals. This week we have listed the top 5 jumper foal suppliers for you.

Harley VDL and Comthago VDL in the lead
This year we don't have only one stallion who leads the ranking, but two! Both the preferent stallion Harley VDL and the only five-year-old Comthago VDL were registered 133 times as the sire of foals born in 2018.
Harley VDL got three foals less registered with the KWPN than last year. But he did rise on this ranking compared to last year, namely from third to first place. In 2017 Harley VDL was already in fourth place,  and the 18-year-old stallion still proves to be very popular.
Comme Il Faut-son Comthago VDL is, just like stable mate Harley VDL, also popular with showjumper breeders. The stallion is a newcomer in the ranking and leads immediately and thus shows similarities with the leader in the dressage foals, Just Wimphof. Last year, Comthago-son Nickelback VDJ became reserve champion at the Central Inspection of Zuid-Holland and Niwica van de Hermitage was Reserve Champion of the foal inspection in Dalen.

Places 2 to 5
In second place, we find, with 116 KWPN-registered jumper foals Grand Prix-stallion Arezzo VDL. Last year the stallion disappeared from the ranking after he was also in second place in 2017. I’m Special de Muze (by Emerald van't Ruytershof) follows in third with only four foals less. This eleven-year-old stallion is produced by Zoï Snels, stable rider of Team Nijhof, at international 1.45m level and is in this ranking for the first time. From the Cornet Obolensky-son Ibolensky 106 KWPN jumper foals are registered. This six-year-old stallion finished third at the KWPN Stallion Show in the Blom Stallion Competition Jumping class M. In fifth place we see the Champion of the KWPN Stallion Show 2017: Jardonnay VDL with 104 KWPN-registered jumping foals. This five-year-old son of Kannan achieved 84 points in the performance test in 2017 with 8.5s for his canter, reflexes, power, rideability, attitude and talent. In his first year as a breeding stallion, he immediately enters the top 5.

Young stallions
It is striking that, compared to last year, younger stallions are in the top 5. In total, 41% of the registered KWPN jumper foals have a sire that is now 8 years old at the most. Comthago VDL, I’m Special de Muze, Ibolensky and Jardonnay VDL are among the top 5. Six-year-old Il Est Balou follows in sixth place with 80 foals.

Total number of stallions
The top 5 is responsible for 704 foals, which is 12.5% of the total number of KWPN registered jumper foals. In 2018, 538 different stallions signed for the paternity of these KWPN-registered jumper foals. Of these 538 stallions, 416 stallions saw 1 to 10 foals registered at the KWPN last year. 60 stallions scored 11 to 25 foals and 35 stallions 26 to 50 foals. 21 stallions have 51 to 102 offspring, in total this group provides the most foals: 1,569 in total, which is almost 28% of the total.
