Ovinio Follows in His Father’s Footsteps in Van Santvoort Makelaars Cup
The six-year-olds faced a serious challenge in the Van Santvoort Makelaars Cup, with no fewer than four KWPN-approved stallions finishing among the top six—winner Ovinio included.
The top eleven six-year-olds with Dutch registration were selected through the KWPN Championship to represent the Netherlands at the World Championships in Lanaken next month. Judging by the quality on display today, this team will be a strong delegation.
Thrilling Competition
It all came down to the very last rider in the ten-horse jump-off. Steven Veldhuis, riding Oilily Lady SMH (Impala SMH out of Gipsy Lady elite sport-spr PROK D-OC by Arezzo VDL, bred by Minne Hovenga), had already won the semi-final and was last to go. He came just short of knocking Bas Moerings and the KWPN-approved stallion Ovinio (Ipsthar out of Kovinia sport-spr by Vigo d’Arsouilles, bred by Geert Moerings) off the top spot.
With his careful, cooperative, and efficiently jumping Ovinio, Bas Moerings claimed another impressive win—he previously won the KWPN Championship with Ipsthar, Ovinio’s sire, as both a five- and six-year-old. Steven Veldhuis has only recently teamed up with Oilily Lady SMH, owned by Reinske Wassenaar, but clearly has great chemistry with the chestnut mare.
Third place went to another promising duo: Jarno van Erp with the impressive KWPN-approved stallion Oslo (Côte de Zélande Delta Mossel Z out of Kelvira elite IBOP-spr D-OC by Chaman, bred/owned by M. van Heel and co-registered by Joop van Uytert). Displaying great scope, body use, and attitude, Oslo made a strong statement at this championship and will get the chance to prove himself again in Lanaken for the second year in a row.
Stallions
The KWPN-approved stallions On the Spot (Diamant de Semilly out of Kathelien W keur IBOP-spr by Cornet Obolensky, bred by Jan and Willem Greve), who jumped with great power under Matt Garrigan, and Tattoo H&DB TN (Parfait van het Schaeck out of O’Mega H&DB by Kannan, bred by Valentijn De Bock and Carl Heyrman), ridden by Fabiënne Lichtenvoort Cats, also delivered faultless rounds throughout the championship. They finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
