Performance test report
Performance Ermelo 1978Happy and intelligent stallion. He shows courage, is playful and obedient. In the beginning he developed well, later he did not make much progress. He likes to learn and he learns quickly. He finds the work to be light and he likes it. He is attentive; his ears are very attentive. He is quickly distracted when working and he likes to look around. He really likes to go and he is very playful.
The walk is reasonable, the trot and the canter are more than sufficient. The trot could be carried more; the regularity is good. He has quick technique in free jumping and jumping under saddle. He is careful with his legs, the bascule could be better and the jumps could be longer. The cross-country gallop has insufficient scope. He is very good in harness.
Pulling test: he is good in front of the sled; he is good in front of the cart but he is tense.
Riding test: he is irregular in the trot, moves his head a lot, irregular in the walk; the canter is his strongest point.
Jumping under saddle: more than sufficient scope, little bascule.
Free jumping: very much scope, good ability to evaluate, more than sufficient technique, not an ideal bascule.
Cross-country: he is obedient and goes forward over the steeple jumps, does not have a real steeple gallop; he is reliable and safe during the cross country, the gallop extends more and more.
He has much talent for jumping, sufficient talent for dressage, moderate talent for cross-country. He was well fed upon arrival. He became more like a riding type during the test. He is calm in the stall but he can be ill mannered, especially while being groomed.
At the start he had moderate feet. He had a scar on the right haunch. The hindlegs are crooked with rough spavins. He has a cough. On 4/04 he was treated for a small wound on the left foreleg. On 5/16 and on 5/22 he was treated for a throat infection. On 3/25 and 5/19 he was worned. On 4/14 he was treated for a skin infection.
Conformation
The stallion is sufficiently hard. He could be a little more riding type. The neck is set on a little high, the foreleg is a little under the body. He can perform. He should have a little more substance.

Offspring report
Offspring 1980 (foals)The stallion Pion comes from very interesting bloodlines and was very successful in passing on a number of important riding horse characteristics in full strength.
This was very clear in the foals that were shown because for a great part they were out of mares that were insufficient riding type themselves. The stallion clearly has a positive influence, both in regards to conformation and movement. The movement of this group of foals was very convincing. It was very noteworthy that there was almost no difference between the foals that were picked by the studbook and those that were selected by the stallion owner. The foals were almost all sufficiently developed. They had refinement, hardness and nobility and the legs were lean. A correct head completed the picture. One criticism that could be made is that the foals could be built a little more forward. Several examples could have more depth. The neck is a little vertical, which gives the foals stature and made for a happy presentation. There are a few foals with a neck that lack muscling. The foreleg was sometimes even on the delicate side, while the stance was sometimes a bit straight. The good length of the croup and placement of the shoulder was very important. Several foals had an overbite. This could disappear as the foals grow. The walk was sufficiently good, though some foals could push more from behind. The trot was presented with a lot of suppleness, scope and a good suspension.
The foals out of moderately moving mares also had excellent movement.
Shown: 16 foals out of 69 breedings.
1986
Pion was approved for a first three year term.
1989
Pion was again approved for a term of three years.
