Performance test report
A stallion with a lot of charisma. He is a little short-coupled but otherwise his type is good. He has a well-muscled, long croup. The joints should have more substance. A remark was made about the stance of the hindleg.Performance Ermelo 1987
Playful, friendly, honest with good humor. He was still green at the start of the test and liked to look around. He showed much resistance during the first few weeks but started to carry himself better later on and was good to work. He has good use of the neck and back and gives his rider a good feeling. The walk is a little hurried but sufficient in scope. He shows sufficient suppleness in the trot. The canter is carried nicely. He is a very skillful jumper and has good technique in the foreleg. He jumps easily, he twists the hindquarter a little when going over the jumps. He works well in cross country and has an easy gallop. He is more than willing to work, likes to go and enjoys the work. He finds the work easy. He has more than sufficient talent for dressage, jumping and cross country. He was in good condition upon arrival and muscled up more during the test.
During the first few weeks he was restless in his stall but this improved later.
The knee on the right foreleg was swollen when he arrived. On 3/17 the knee was still swollen and he was treated. On 4/01 the flexion tests on both feet, but especially the left front, were positive. His radiographs were taken only a short time before the test and no serious defects were noticed at that time. Therefore no further testing was done. On 4/04 he had an abscess on the right fore. On 4/08 first the left and then the right knee locked up when he left his stall. On 5/26 this happened a few times and he was sent to Utrecht where, on 5/29, the condition could not be verified. He had specialized training for a few weeks because of this problem.

Offspring report
Offspring 1989 (foals)This stallion showed sufficiently developed, riding type foals that were long in the ribs. The head is shaped well and shows a lot of expression. The neck has sufficient length, sometimes it is a little deep from the chest. The neck is carried well during movement. The selected foals especially had good neck length and therefore a nice natural bend in the neck. The wither is well-developed and has good length. The shoulder has good length that generally slopes. The picked foals sometimes had a somewhat straight shoulder. The croup is shaped well with sufficient length and a long buttock. The foreleg generally has a good stance with sufficient substance, but the picked foals had a tendency toward a straight foreleg. A remark was made about the hock, which should sometimes be a little more generously developed. It should also have more heel because it causes the hock to appear round. The transition to the cannon is often not smooth. The selected foals have a better hock. The walk is big and elastic. The trot is good, elastic, light-footed and easy, though there is some variation. A number of the foals trot extra well, a few should use the hindleg more. The stallion served generously developed, good riding type mares. The foals were easy to handle.
In short: sufficiently developed, riding type foals with big, light-footed movement. The build of the hindleg should be more correct.
Shown: 22 foals out of 98 breedings.
Disapproved 1992
Casanova"s approved status was not maintained because out of the 52 registered mares only 20 were accepted into the studbook and only 5 were awarded a predicate, a ratio that is less than the average of around 30%.
The conformation bore out that though in general his offspring have a good movement mechanism, it does not outweigh the negative factors that are also apparent from the conformation index: light legs, remarks about the shape of the neck, remarks about the wither/shoulder formation, remarks about the transition of the back/loin formation and also about the hooves that are often narrow.
The stallion"s own performance in competition (first he jumped but did not qualify for the final, later dressage where he could not reach a satisfying result) can"t be seen as a compensating element.
Re-keuring 1992
Casanova was deleted from the KWPN stallion roster because of the evaluation of his three-year old offspring. The owners requested a re-keuring. The committee met in order to decide and came to the conclusion that there were not sufficient reasons to change to decision made by the stallion committee. Therefore Casanova remains disapproved for KWPN breeding.
1997
Casanova was again approved for KWPN breeding.
